Prison Union Supports "At Risk Youth" Scheme

The Corrections Association of New Zealand (CANZ) is to sponsor the "Youth Life Skills" training scheme currently being run by Burnham Military Camp. The relationship between the two organisations begins on Friday when CANZ, which represents more than 90% of Prisons staff, will hand over more than $4,000 worth of new equipment to course members participating in a "passing out" parade.

CANZ spokesperson Brian Davies said that the initiative is membership-driven and is based on a desire to provide a fence at the top of the cliff rather than an ambulance at the bottom. The vast majority of prisons staff are caring, committed professionals who are deeply concerned by the number of young offenders who return to prison, often only weeks or months after being released.

"Our members are keen to support any initiative that steers youngsters away from the front gates of the "Big House" and assists them in developing a more positive approach to life. We see this week's contribution as being the first step in an on-going and hopefully productive relationship between the two organisations."

Future assistance will not necessarily be limited to material contributions, as members throughout the country have demonstrated an interest in providing voluntary support for any new initiatives developed by the army in connection with the scheme.

"We're keen to contribute in any way we can and will be liasing with Army personnel for the purpose of developing a mutually beneficial strategy for the future."
