12 June 2005 - ORRECTIONS UNION SAYS GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT ACTING ILLEGALLY

The President of the Corrections Association of New Zealand, Beven Hanlon has instructed the Unions Lawyers to seek urgency in the Employment Relations Authority for a Compliance Order to reduce the number of inmates being admitted to some New Zealand prisons.

“There is evidence of a number of breaches of the Operating Capacity of a number of Prisons, and this Union is not prepared to put at risk the safety of its members, the public, or the inmates who are being put into overcrowded situations, so we are seeking an urgent hearing.

We understand at one Prison, the Management have instructed staff to not officially record the number of inmates being admitted. There is also a situation where it would not be possible to lock down all inmates in an emergency, because of insufficient accommodation. These are examples of what the Union sees as breaches of the Corrections Act”. said Beven Hanlon.
