Late last night a male inmate escaped from Christchurch Men’s Prison. It is believed that the prisoner smashed his way out of the cell and unit then scaled the perimeter fence.

CANZ National President Beven Hanlon said “that as far as he was aware staff followed all practicable steps to ensure this inmate didn’t escape.”

“CANZ will have some questions for the department when they conduct their investigation over this escape but it is too early to say why this inmate managed to escape.”

CANZ National President said that “he hoped the Department were taking steps to protect one of our members as he believed this inmate had assaulted an officer earlier this year.”
