PRISON OFFICERS SUPPORT INSTRUCTORS STRIKE ACTION

Prison Officers have thrown their support behind the Inmate Education Instructors who have embarked on an Industrial Campaign which kicks off with a complete overtime ban on 19 December for an indefinite period.

The actions of the Instructors who recently rejected the employers final offer of a nil wage increase and other concessions will inevitably increase the workloads and pressures on prison officers who are already under stress from short staffing and record Inmate numbers.

Corrections Association National President Beven Hanlon said today that Corrections Officers were going to be required to control an increase in Inmate movements because of the Education Instructors action. The Officers would comply with the demands of the extra workload, but Mr Hanlon warned that the stress Officers were currently under, and the Health and Safety issues associated with extra Inmate movements would be closely monitored.

Beven Hanlon stated that the Union had instructed Corrections Officers to not do the work which was normally performed by the Education Instructors.
