INMATE INSTRUCTORS GIVE EMPLOYER XMAS MESSAGE

Catering Instructors at Hawkes Bay Prison have today issued their employer, the Department of Corrections with 14 Days Notice of a 24 hour strike beginning at 12.01am on Sunday 25 December (Xmas Day).

The Catering Staff say that as no goodwill has been shown to them by their employer, they intend to have their first Xmas at home with their families in 4 years, rather than spend the day feeding the 620 inmates at Hawkes Bay Prison.

Corrections Association National President Beven Hanlon said today that the strike was a forerunner of many site by site actions that would occur until the Department of Corrections recognised the value of the Inmate Instructors.

Beven Hanlon said the Xmas Strike would cause problems for Corrections Officers because they will refuse to carry out the Instructors normal workload and the Inmates will miss out on Xmas Dinner.
