MEDIA RELEASE - 12 December 2006

Call for O'Connor to quit, just rubbish

Beven Hanlon the president of the Corrections Association of New Zealand said that calls for Damien O’Connor to resign were ridiculous. Our members have complete faith in both the Minister and the CEO B Matthews.

If anyone person or groups of people should be held accountable then the people that allowed untrained cheap labour to carry out the essential service of court escorts should be the ones to stand up. In 1998 the National Party was looking to cut costs and introduced the Chubb contract. When you are a private company your, goal is to make a profit for your shareholders. This is one of the reasons that wages and conditions are so poor for their staff. If this service is publicly run, the emphasis is on the people not the profit said Beven.

CANZ have yet to see the Ashley report, but we are surprised from some comments made in the media so far. CANZ will be making comment once we have received the report and had time read and digest the findings.
