Stand Alone Night Shift - Mediation

Further to our telephone conversation this morning, I can now confirm that the management representatives at the consultation meeting on Wednesday 20 November 2002 did agree that mediation would be an appropriate means of working to resolve the issues in dispute. I note, however, that the issues still in dispute were never in fact formally tabled, and I am still unclear as to whether at least some of these are in fact of a national (policy) nature rather than matters which can be resolved by mediation at a local level.

Before proceeding to mediation, therefore, I seek that you advise me formally of the alleged outstanding issues, so that I can determine whether there needs to be appropriate National Office representation to address the policy issues which are outside my authority to change. When I have that information, I will seek advice as appropriate, and confirm that we are willing to proceed to mediation. You should note, however, that on Wednesday 27 November there is a scheduled meeting of the Regional Management Team, which would preclude attendance at mediation by key management representatives on that day. We would be prepared to attend mediation at a mutually convenient date thereafter, subject to the caveats outlined above.
