CANZ NEWS 11 March 2003 |
|
Recent discussions between PPS and CANZ failed to resolve the concerns surrounding the distribution of Inmate medication and the matter becomes the latest in a long line of disputes that have to be referred on to the Employment Relations Authority. Although it’s disappointing, it isn’t at all surprising, because PPS representatives once again followed the well-trodden path whereby they say all the right things during discussions and then go away and do all the wrong things in the workplace. CANZ was, as always, proactive to the extent that we tabled three separate options for distributing medication in a manner that would protect both our members and potentially vulnerable inmates. Unfortunately, our good faith approach was rejected in the same manner as all three options and PPS have now distributed a unilateral procedure for immediate implementation. As usual, Canterbury seems to be leading the charge towards the customary confrontation that inevitably results from honest endeavours to work cooperatively with your employer! I have it on good authority that Corrections Officers in Invercargill will be given what is deemed to be a lawful instruction to issue medication today and it is clear that a refusal will result in disciplinary proceedings. Accordingly, we strongly advise these Officers and any other CANZ members who find themselves in similar circumstances, to react in the following manner: 1. Inform the person given the instruction that it is CANZ’s view
that the instruction is not lawful. CANZ has already filed with the Employment Relations Authority in respect
of this issue and it is my understanding that a date has already been
arranged for mediation. We will, as always, keep you posted Brian Davies |
