CANZ

DISTRIBUTION of MEDICATION

You should be aware that CANZ has filed with the Employment Relations Authority on the legality of PPS introducing a policy that requires Corrections Officers to distribute both “over the counter medications and unit packaged prescription medication” in given circumstances.

This policy is introduced via Section B-06-08 & B-06-09 of PPM.

The hearing was scheduled for the 18th & 19th May 2005 however the ERA Adjudicator requested that both parties sit down and enter into further discussions over the issue to both identify the points/areas of contention and dispute with the aim of trying to resolve them at that level.

We met with representatives of Crown Law and PPS on both of those days and all parties displayed a willingness to adopt a constructive approach in which to discuss the matter in an open and frank manner and try to reach a resolution.

To ensure that this level of interaction is continued CANZ has withdrawn from the position that it has reported to have taken by the media on Monday 16th May, namely that Corrections Officers will not distribute any form of medication as from Friday 20th May 2005.

It is the intention of CANZ to display good faith by continuing to act in a responsible, constructive and reasoned manner whilst the other parties show the same level of commitment.

We will keep you informed as developments unfold.
